KOIBIRD BREAKS A SWEAT

KOIBIRD’s new season is here... You better get ready to sweat!

Moving away from its traditional destination focus, KOIBIRD’s SS21 edit looks to invigorate our approach to fitness and wellbeing, presenting a series of activewear designers that break free from the usual black-and-boring workout uniform. As always with KOIBIRD’s offering, the edit champions a roster of dynamic labels from across the globe that will have you sprint, squat, stretch and sweat in style.

With travel limited and mental and physical health being so crucial in this climate, delivering an edit for ‘now’, that will encourage activity in a fun-fuelled and accessible way was a central focus when selecting the season’s theme. Ahead of the Summer 2021 Olympics, KOIBIRD Breaks a Sweat encourages us all to get healthy and fit, no matter how unconventional the activity. Instead of yearning for those team sports and classes of a past time, branch out to new fitness horizons that can be done solo, especially those that are, ahem, fun. Be it skateboarding or rollerblading, hula hooping or pole dancing, whatever it is you were considering taking up but were too shy… Now is the time – sweat like you mean it!

Launching at the very beginning of Women’s History Month, there will be a drive to spotlight and encourage women in sport throughout the season. Building a community of designers that work to empower women will be approached in a plethora of ways, be this through brand ethics, technical prowess, conscious production or charitable efforts.

Drawing inspiration from fitness trends over the years, athleisure nostalgia plays a key role in the campaign, with references to 80s aerobics that will make you shout ‘Let’s Get Physical’ whilst fishing out your scrunchie and legwarmers. High-shine, wet-look sets in pastel hues from Heroine Sport and Beach Riot inject the edit with a distinctly 80s flair. Casualwear also arrives in the guise of 90s tie-dye-drenched loungewear, courtesy of Hadid-dynasty favourite La Detresse. This sits alongside ‘Smiley’ raver iconography from streetwear behemoth Chinatown Market and KOIBIRD exclusive Nervis. Alongside this, Juicy Couture’s brash approach to 2000’s ostentation acts as a fitting climax to this season’s blend of easy casualwear with transitional sportswear.

But of course, this sense of frivolity needn’t compromise functionality, with a selection of designers offering superior technical elements. Twenty Montreal and Koral look to enhance both aesthetic and performance via unique 3D knitting techniques and patented compression materials that flatters the form and boosts function. Holding its roots in classical ballet, Port de Bras’ highly stylised approach to contemporary dance apparel refuses to undermine its conscious credentials, favouring 100% biodegradable fabrics. Cult Form, another KOIBIRD exclusive, shares this conscious approach to design, utilising the traditional Turkish Yorgan technique to create disco-influenced workout pieces in a sea of primary colours.

As any true fitness guru will tell you, one of the best parts of the exercise is the apres-sport social. Be it at a juice bar for a breather, or a walk in the park with a matcha latte and your gym buddy, leading LA staple brands such as Adam Selman, Cotton Citizen and Spiritual Gangster present a mix of key casual pieces for those post-workout activities. Expect a mix of high-quality compositions with flirty sculptural cut-outs, mesh detailing and vibrant prints in various palettes.

And the fun doesn’t end there… KOIBIRD also harnesses the breadth of its offering with its expansion into fitness equipment, including pink wearable weights from Bala, basketballs from Chinatown Market and Tangram’s smart skipping ropes. And for the beauty aficionados, Pharmacy-K looks to encourage clean living more than ever before, pooling together a comprehensive wellness curation of vegan supplements, adaptogens and medicinal powders. Jovial new additions include Raw Nice’s rainbow vegan powders and Seattle Elderberry’s homeopathic gummy bear kit. Anima Mundi and Evolution Botanicals further solidify this cleaner approach, tackling digestion, inflammation and restoration with a series of collagen boosters and plant-based supplements. As for skincare, Agent Nateur and Costa Brazil present cruelty-free deodorants and luxurious oils and essences that look to energise and rejuvenate… So you’ll be more excited than ever to create the perfect gym wash bag.

With brick-and-mortar efforts compromised for the majority of the industry, KOIBIRD Breaks a Sweat holds a core focus on digital storytelling, with the team still set to embark on its signature store design overhaul pending re-opening.
